Learn how an authorised treatment facility records, depollutes and processes an end-of-life vehicle before suitable parts and materials are recovered.
A vehicle sent for destruction goes to an authorised treatment facility operating under the relevant environmental permit. The site records the vehicle and removes or controls fuel, oils, coolant, batteries and other hazardous components before further dismantling or crushing.
Suitable parts and materials can then enter reuse, recycling or other recovery routes. The 95% end-of-life vehicle recovery target is measured by average vehicle weight across treatment activity; it is not a promise that every component of every individual car will be recycled.
Use the environmental regulator's public register or the official vehicle-scrapyard finder to check the current permit holder and site. A directory record should be verified before travelling because status, opening hours and vehicle acceptance can change.
